Gamma rays from molecular clouds

چکیده

It is believed that the observed diffuse gamma ray emission from the galactic plane is the result of interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. Such emission can be amplified if cosmic rays penetrate into dense molecular clouds. The propagation of cosmic rays inside a molecular cloud has been studied assuming an arbitrary energy and space dependent diffusion coefficient. If the diffusion coefficient inside the cloud is significantly smaller compared to the average one derived for the galactic disk, the observed gamma ray spectrum appears harder than the cosmic ray spectrum, mainly due to the slower penetration of the low energy particles towards the core of the cloud. This may produce a great variety of gamma ray spectra. PACS First · Second · More

Broad-band nonthermal emission from molecular clouds illuminated by cosmic rays from nearby supernova remnants

Molecular clouds are expected to emit non-thermal radiation due to cosmic ray interactions in the dense magnetized gas. Such emission is amplified if a cloud is located close to an accelerator of cosmic rays and if energetic particles can leave the accelerator site and diffusively reach the cloud. We consider here the situation in which a molecular cloud is located in the proximity of a superno...

High-Latitude Molecular Clouds as γ-ray Sources for GLAST

For about two decades, a population of relative small and nearby molecular clouds has been known to exist at high Galactic latitudes. Lying more than 10 from the Galactic plane, these clouds have typical distances of ∼150 pc, angular sizes of ∼1, and masses of order tens of solar masses. These objects are passive sources of high-energy γ-rays through cosmic ray-gas interactions. Using a new wid...

Gamma Rays from Molecular Clouds

High energy γ-rays from individual giant molecular clouds contain unique information about the hidden sites of acceleration of galactic cosmic rays, and provide a feasible method for study of propagation of cosmic rays in the Galactic Disk on scales ≤ 100 pc. I discuss the spectral features of π-decay γ-radiation from clouds/targets located in proximity of relatively young proton accelerators, ...

Interpretation of radio continuum and molecular line observations of Sgr B2: free–free and synchrotron emission, and implications for cosmic rays

Recent ammonia (1,1) inversion line data on the Galactic star-forming region Sgr B2 show that the column density is consistent with a radial Gaussian density profile with a standard deviation of 2.75 pc. Deriving a formula for the virial mass of spherical Gaussian clouds, we obtain Mvir = 1.9 × 106 M for Sgr B2. For this matter distribution, a reasonable magnetic field and an impinging flux of ...
